"The teacher is an ever-burning lamp by whose light we can watch the mind and senses. The teacher enlightens not through her words but through the example of her life. The teacher wakes the student who wishes to open his or her heart to the teacher. Only when the student loves the teacher with real devotion will the mind awaken. The ego must be removed; this painful process is only possible through surrender to the teacher. The teacher breaks the ego's shell, and the disciple rises like a banyan tree, giving shade to the world."
